Olivetti: When Office Machines Became Beautiful
How an Italian company transformed typewriters, calculators and offices into objects of design.
Olivetti understood something unusually early: the objects we use for work do not have to be anonymous.
From typewriters and calculators to shops, offices and advertising, the Italian company treated almost every part of working life as an opportunity for design.
At Retro Italy, Olivetti represents one of the clearest examples of what made twentieth-century Italian design distinctive. Function mattered, but so did colour, typography, architecture and the emotional relationship people developed with everyday objects.

More Than a Typewriter Company
Founded in Ivrea in 1908, Olivetti became internationally known for typewriters and office equipment. But its importance went far beyond engineering.
Under Adriano Olivetti, the company developed an unusually broad idea of what a modern industrial company could be. Products, factories, offices, advertising and retail spaces were all treated as parts of the same visual world.
Olivetti worked with architects, graphic designers and industrial designers rather than treating appearance as something added at the end.
That approach helped create a remarkably consistent identity.
Under Adriano Olivetti, the company developed an unusually broad idea of what a modern industrial company could be. Products, factories, offices, advertising and retail spaces were all treated as parts of the same visual world.
Olivetti worked with architects, graphic designers and industrial designers rather than treating appearance as something added at the end.
That approach helped create a remarkably consistent identity.
Even practical machines intended for offices could have elegant proportions, carefully selected colours and a personality of their own.
Machines With Personality
The typewriter is usually imagined as a purely functional object: keys, metal, mechanisms and paper.
Olivetti made it something more.
Designers such as Marcello Nizzoli helped give machines like the Lettera 22 a compact, approachable form that felt very different from heavier office equipment of the period.
Later, Olivetti became even more experimental.
The Valentine portable typewriter, designed by Ettore Sottsass with Perry King and introduced in 1969, abandoned the traditional grey office-machine aesthetic almost completely.
Its bright red body and portable case made it feel closer to a fashion accessory than office equipment.
It was still a typewriter.
But it also communicated attitude.
That idea — that useful objects could express personality — would become one of the defining characteristics of Italian interiors and design culture.
Olivetti made it something more.
